My weekly business networking meeting was done and I said good-bye to everyone. But I didn’t arrange a ride home. So I started walking. It was going to be a really long walk.
Next thing I know, the intersection required a maze of stairs and the sidewalks were very confusing. Suddenly my white cane broke. It was as though it just disintegrated into several different pieces.
I found myself wondering how in the world I was going to navigate the distance home without the help of my cane. I talked some sense into myself so I didn’t freak out. “OK, I can see a couple steps ahead. That’s enough if I go slow. I just won’t rush. I’ll take it easy and don’t go too fast.”
Then I thought’ “Wait a minute! I already got a ride home from my meeting. This can’t be real.” That’s when I realized I was dreaming. What a relief!
There’s a great lesson to be learned from that crazy dream, though. Sometimes we can’t see really far ahead of us in life, but we need to proceed anyway. As long as we can discern the next few steps to take, we should move forward.
Are you unclear on exactly what you want to do to make your own unique impact? Not sure what the end result will be? You can probably figure out the next couple of steps you should take. As you take those steps, the ones to take after them will likely become clear.
“Agile Planning” is one of the mindsets we included in our book, Splash! Increase Your Life’s Impact. The idea is that the path we’ll follow is seldom revealed in it’s entirety up front. Instead, we need to take the steps we know to take now and trust that as we do so, more steps will be revealed.
It’s OK to take those next few steps now. Taking the steps we know to take now ensures we won’t stay stuck when we could be making a difference in the lives of other people. After all, there are people who need your positive impact on their lives. How long will they need to wait before you step up and move?
If you like, you can share here the next couple steps you plan to take to make your positive impact. We’d love to support you in your journey!
