Regrets are a
bummer. Nobody wants them. So what can you do to have fewer regrets in life?
Do stuff.
That’s as opposed to not doing stuff.
Researchers at Cornell university found that only 25% of people said they regretted doing something, but 75% said they regretted not doing something.
Some of the most common regrets included:
- Not devoting enough time to personal relationships
- Missed educational opportunities
- Failure to “seize the moment”
Interestingly, people tended not to regret the things they did even when those things are not important to them now, like collecting baseball cards or golfing. Maybe people regretted more the things they did not do because they could continue picturing themselves doing it even after the opportunity had passed.
It appears that we will have fewer regrets (and perhaps more satisfaction in life) when we seize opportunities and take action. I am choosing to invest a month of my time into getting a guide dog. Many blind people told me they wish they had gotten their guide dog earlier. So I am seizing the opportunity to do it now.
Vive la life without regrets!
How about you? Is there anything important you’ve been putting off? Have you been thinking about taking a class, spending more time with someone special, maybe even changing careers? Maybe it’s been weighing heavy on your heart to determine your purpose and live your calling.
I encourage you to avoid regrets by considering if, perhaps, the time to do that thing is now.
