A lifesong is a beautiful thing. It represents your unique impact on the world. It is the impact only you can have.
We are each uniquely equipped with strengths, passions, life experiences, and more. Each of these things combine to make us who we are. They also shape how we will affect other people.
Unfortunately, it is not the norm to get deliberate about our lifesong. Instead, the norm is to take life as it comes. We deal with whatever happens to come our way. Instead of doing our own unique thing in the world, we settle for mediocre (a.k.a. “Normal”). We tend to do what we see everybody else doing.
- go to school
- get a job
- buy a house
- start a family
- go for a promotion
- upgrade the car and the house
- retire, play golf and travel
Instead of living our own lifesong, we are like the mockingbird. The mockingbird’s song is a hodgepodge of sounds he hears. A dog barking in the distance will interrupt a song and he will mimic the dogs bark. Then he imitates the song of another bird he hears. Then it’s the sound of the car alarm being set. He has no song of his own. You can even introduce sounds yourself and hear him repeat them back.
The range of sounds the mockingbird can make is amazing. What it lacks, though, is it’s own unique song.
Don’t be like the mockingbird. There is a song inside of you waiting to be set free. It is a beautiful expression that’s uniquely you.
Even more, there are people who need you to step up and live out your lifesong. They need your unique impact on their life. They need you.
