We receive lots of messages that say that our impact on people’s lives isn’t important. We’re told that as long as we don’t hurt anyone, it’s good. We’re told that the highest value is to pursue our happiness. We look at what everyone else is doing, and we think that making an impact is a good thing to do on the side, for someday later, or for someone else. The reality is that your impact is important.
Getting serious about your life’s results ranks up there as one of the most important things you can do – like saving for kid’s college, saving for retirement, forgiving people, and making sure your loved ones know that you love them.
Priorities
Dave Ramsey, in his Financial Peace University, has this segment where he asks people if they have kids, have nieces or nephews, or there’s a kid on the planet somewhere that they like. Then he asks people that if this kid needed a medical procedure, and it would cost $5,000, could they find a way to get the money to pay for it. Everyone in the audience says, “Yes.”
The reason that people say, “Yes,” is that this medical procedure is important – more important than other things in our life. We would change things in our life, at least temporarily, to make this procedure happen. Something in our gut says, “I will make this happen some way, somehow.”
Well, making your impact in the world is important! Like for the medical procedure, it would serve us to quickly make changes in our life as necessary to make room for the legacy we want to live.
The alternative, looks like some of the following:
- We decide that making an impact is something we can do in retirement. We put it off. We for example, continue to live for the bigger lifestyle thinking that someday we’ll get around to “making our mark” on the world. Then retirement comes and our life fills up with doctor visits, the vacations we always wanted to take, managing our retirement funds, and walking the dog. So, we continue to put off living our legacy.
- Or we decide that making an impact is important but we just don’t have time for it now. We go about our busy weeks as usual, taking care of things as they come up. Then on a fateful day, a car accident ends our life early.
I can share from personal experience. When we are staring at the end of our life and we look back, we will regret the things we didn’t do far more than the things we did. This place at the end of life is where the value of things become crystal clear. Living a legacy is one of the most important things we can do with our life.
People are praying for you to show up. Sure, maybe they aren’t praying specifically for you, but when you show up, you can be an answer to their prayers.
Don’t put this off. Step into your life’s legacy now.
