You Get What You Tolerate

MessYour life isn’t a result of your circumstances. Instead, you get what you tolerate. Your life is filled with the things for which you settle – the things that you allow to remain in your life.

One of the tough truths to take in is the idea that we are responsible for our experiences in life. People will argue that they didn’t cause this event or that situation.

I like to explain that we are responsible for our life like a CEO is responsible for the success of their company. Sure, the CEO didn’t create the market conditions, they didn’t control their employees’ behaviors, but they are responsible for it all. Here’s how.

The CEO is responsible for how the company responds to market conditions. He creates the tone of the work environment for employees. He sets corporate values by words and actions. Everything rests on the CEO’s choices, actions and character.

In this same way, you are responsible for your life. You chose where to work. You choose who you hang out with. You choose where to live. You choose how you respond to circumstances. You are responsible.

Maybe you don’t cause a circumstance in your life, but it is your responsibility if you allow it to remain or to repeat. The difference between a broke person and a poor person is that being poor is a way of life, while being broke is temporary. The broke person says, “this is not good enough,” while the poor person just accepts their circumstance. You get what you tolerate.

The first step to making a deep positive impact with our life is to completely own the the results we are creating, or not creating. You can claim that other people and circumstances caused the results, but it’s not true. You either tolerate the results you are getting, or you can say, “That’s not good enough!,” and go change some lives for the better.

It rests entirely on you, what do you want to be the results of your life?
