I think it’d be cool if everyone was an expert on something. I’d love to be surrounded by experts: experts in creating change, in starting a movement, in using social media to influence people, in self-improvement, and more. Honestly, I believe we all could be experts if we chose to become one.
Becoming an expert requires a choice to become one and persistent effort to make it happen. Once a person is an expert, they would need to continue working on it to maintain that status. No slacking off here, or they would lose their edge.
I don’t know that it’d be worthwhile to become an expert in just anything. I think it would make sense to become an expert in what we are really passionate about–something that actually makes a difference in the lives of other people. So, while I love cats, I don’t choose to become an expert on cats because I want to put my efforts into things that matter in the long run, that is, other people.
We love helping people get in touch with their passions and use something they are passionate about to fuel a positive impact. But getting in touch with one’s passions isn’t the biggest barrier. What I’ve observed is that people hold themselves back because they don’t see themselves as the kind of person that can make a tremendous difference. It’s that limiting self-perception that would keep people from becoming an expert on something significant.
Do you see yourself as the kind of person who can make a tremendous difference in the lives of other people. Do you know that you have what it takes to make a hugely positive impact. I believe you do. But you need to believe it for yourself. We have found that limiting self-beliefs are the major reason people don’t step out into their purpose and their calling. So we deal with people’s beliefs about themselves regularly in our individual and group coaching and in our seminars. We help people see themselves more accurately so they can achieve the positive impact they are really capable of.
Being and expert is just one facet of making a real difference in the lives of other people. You can become an expert in your particular passion, whether it’s child sexual abuse, quitting bad habits or communicating well. There are so many options for you to build an expertise.
So, are you ready to become an expert? Remember, first it takes a decision to do it. Then you can get started on learning what you need to know through books, videos, classes, talking to other experts, and so on. Then you can practice and practice and practice. There’s no substitute for learning by experience.
Go for it! Like I said, I’d love to be surrounded by more experts in my life.
