When Our Spouse’s Calling Isn’t Our Calling

holding handsOften the problem we experience is that we have a calling or a passion for something and our spouse doesn’t get it. For example, our partner is still working to live a better lifestyle, and we are working to make the world a better place. However, sometimes the problem we face is that our spouse does get it, but they want to do something different. This is when our spouse’s calling isn’t our calling.

Maybe we have a passion for youth and our spouse has a passion for the elderly. So what do we do with this?

We certainly can go off and do separate things together. But this isn’t ideal. We, instead, recommend you find a way to blend your callings into one activity you can do together.

One key to understand is that we don’t just have one perfect calling on our life. We have many things about which we can be passionate. We have many strengths we can utilize. And there are many ways to make a positive impact on the world.

Here are some examples:

  1. One spouse has a strength for administrative work, the other is great at mentoring. This couple just needs to find a common passion – maybe it’s inner city kids. Now they can blend their strengths and passions to make a meaningful impact in the world.
  2. Once spouse is passionate about youth, the other cares about the elderly. One thought is that perhaps this couple can create events where youth are provided life learning experiences by interacting and caring for the elderly.
  3. Finally, maybe one spouse cares about cancer patients and the other cares about helping parents raise kids. In this case, maybe both spouses consider the other things about which they are passionate. Maybe they both decide they are also passionate about supporting single mothers.

If you and your spouse feel like you have separate callings, don’t give up. Keep searching for a way to go on an adventure together, both of you living your legacy as a combined effort.

What about you? Are both you and your spouse pursing a passion? Have you found a way to blend your efforts? Tell us about it.
