The Main Thing

bullseyeThere is a great quote from Stephen Covey which is, “The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.” Of course, it doesn’t really tell you what that main thing is. So it begs the question, “What is the main thing for you?” That’s what I want to talk about today.

With so many things coming at us in life, it’s easy to lose sight of the main thing. We forget what our main thing is, or we’re so busy we never take time to figure it out.

Is our main thing to increase our life style – ratchet it up one step at a time until we die? Is our main thing to have the most experiences? Maybe we’re meant to accumulate the most happy moments? Is it to do more good than bad in the world? Maybe it’s really all about family.

Our main thing must be the grandest, most compelling thing we can do with our life. If it’s not the biggest, most meaningful, and most impactful thing we can do, then it’s not our main thing. Something else bigger must be our main thing. Or maybe it’s something bigger than that.

What is your main thing? Do you know what your main thing is?

Knowing your main thing is essential. If you don’t know what is your main thing, you can’t make it the main thing of your life. You won’t know to what you should say, “no”, and you won’t know to what you should say, “yes”. Periodically, you’ll be second guessing yourself wondering if you’re involved in the right things.

If you haven’t yet figured out your main thing, start the process of discovering it. If your main thing has “gone to sleep”, it’s time to “wake it up.” Don’t wait until it’s too late. Time is short. Make the most of the days you have.
