Being super-clear on our purpose in life is awesome! It has numerous benefits and helps us avoid some problems, too.
Meaning
When we know what we are here to do, we are free to engage in activities that are meaningful to us. We can move from a life filled with stuff and activities that lack value (although the world might be telling us they’re important). We can choose to focus our time, energy and money on things that matter to us and that make a difference in the lives of other people.
Direction
Our purpose can direct our choice of things like career, relationships and where we live. It can guide our decisions regarding how we use our personal resources. It can even provide direction in our day-to-day activities.
Motivation
Clarity of purpose is like a fire that gets us moving,. When we know our reason for living, it’s a whole lot easier to actually do more because we’ll be excited to make a difference.
More Time for What’s Important
One great benefit of knowing our purpose is that we can stop doing things that don’t line up with our purpose. That means more time well spent and less time wasted.
Alleviation of Guilt
Not only will we be free to say “no” to things that don’t fit our purpose, we can do so without feeling bad about it. After all, we will be more likely to say “yes” to the right things instead.
Connection
So many people long for meaningful connections with other people. Yet our society is set up in such a way that it’s hard to really connect with people. If we orient our lives toward being of service to other people, we are far more likely to really feel we are an important part of a bigger, more meaningful whole.
It is so powerful to have a clear purpose to hold up and to use as a gauge. we’ll be clear when an opportunity is in line with our purpose and when it simply is not the right fit for us.
