Stuck in our heads

Studk in her head: Bored teenager looking depressed, with a grey backgroundWe are stuck in our heads.

We spend a lot of our time on our electronics taking in information from Facebook, Twitter, Internet news, product reviews, and the latest jokes being passed around.

The nightly news reports on events. Then the analyst comes on explaining all the things that will result from the events. Economists tell us what will happen to the economy.

All the ratings and reviews we can now access tell us all the logical reasons why something is good or bad. Rarely does someone write, “It just made me feel uncomfortable,” or “this just doesn’t support my values.”

Then we get caught up in the process. We analyze our relationships, our job situation, and our kid’s behavior among other things. We compare our life with that of others.

All of this is taken in, processed, and analyzed in our heads and it stays there. As we connect to all of the media, we spend more and more of our life in our heads, and we’re losing connection to our hearts.

The problems with living life in our heads are:

  • Our strength and courage comes from our heart, not our head
  • Decisions are made with our heart, not our head
  • Fear comes from our heads

If we are going to live our calling requiring big bold decisions, we won’t make it by remaining in our heads. We need to connect to our heart.

To begin connecting to our hearts we need to start asking different questions. Instead of “What do you think?” we need to ask “How are you feeling?” Instead of asking “What should I do?” we need to ask “How can I best reflect my values and express love right now?” Instead of asking “What?” or even “How?” we need to start asking “Why?”
