Did you know “happiness” and “happen” share the same root word? Happiness is temporary like something that happens. The excitement that comes with new things and good times quickly fades. Maybe the pursuit of happiness isn’t all it’s cracked up to be because it’s so fleeting.
Now that Christmas is gone, I hope your happiness isn’t gone with it. The nature of happiness requires a good thing to be happening. Can we be happy when the good thing is all done?
Joy is different from happiness in that it is much more long-lasting. Rather than pursuing happiness, then, we will be much more satisfied when we go for things that bring joy. So, what brings you joy?
I think making a real difference in the lives of other people brings joy. The satisfaction it gives us can last years after the experience is gone. One of the most significant ways we will ever impact other people is through our relationships. Relationships give us a great opportunity to really effect people.
Just consider who has been a strong, positive impact on your own life. you can be that person for someone else.
The most intense joy I have ever experienced has been in the context of a relationship. My relationship with Jesus has been the most amazing experience of all. He has been wonderfully loving and accepting of me, and very patient, too. Just recently, He has made himself so obvious in my own life. He offers his love and acceptance to everyone who wants it.
If you have gotten frustrated with chasing happiness, I encourage you to seek things that will bring you joy instead. Have you found real joy?
Thanks to Pastor Chuck Wysong of Life Community Church. I’d never even heard before that “happiness” and “happen” come from the same word. It kind of helps explain why happiness doesn’t last like it seems like it should.
