Persistence: Continuing in the Face of Difficulty

Traffic BarricadeI heard an excellent story about persistence on the radio. A woman called him and shared that she felt God had called her to work as a CPA. It sounded to me like the CPA test has four parts to it. She finally passed the final part after taking the test for the fourteenth time. The DJ said, “Now THAT’s persistence!” I have to agree.

She was certain it was what she needed to do. It must’ve been really discouraging, though. How many of us would have given up long before the fourteenth try?

There will always be obstacles to Dodge and barriers to overcome when we work toward our calling. It’s never a smooth ride.

When John and I did our first webinar series walking people through our seven steps, the very first session was an utter disaster:

  • I had prepared the presentation but I couldn’t deliver it because my computer got a virus and was running way too slow.
  • John was out of town and he ended up having to teach my lesson for me.
  • I advanced the slides because, as the official presenter, I was the only one who could do it. So there was a 15-20 second delay.
  • I couldn’t connect with the group via the webinar platform. I could just talk to John on the phone while he interacted with the group.

At least when something goes really bad, we can figure we’ve probably been through the worst of it. Just chalk it up as a “learning experience.”

There will be many opportunities to learn as we work toward our calling. Don’t let them stop you in your tracks. Persistence is key in discovering our purpose and living our calling.
