Being passionate about what we’re doing makes a world of difference. I didn’t used to know how important it is to be in touch with and utilize my passions. I figured I have a Master’s Degree in social work and I’m pretty much wired to make a difference in people’s lives. So I assumed it didn’t matter what I did because whatever I do, I will impact people’s lives in a positive way.
A while after John’s heart attack, he wanted to start a financial coaching business to be a blessing to other people. I was fine with that. So we did that for a few years. And we blessed some people through it, too. But you know what I found out? I’m NOT passionate about personal finances. Some people are, but not me.
A few years ago, we switched our focus and started Simply Great Lives. In the financial coaching, we were wanting to help people do well with their money so they could make a difference in the world. Now we could focus on the making a difference part.
This year, I’ve really gotten in touch with my passion. As a result of some abuse I endured as a child, I’ve come to believe people generally don’t hurt other people on purpose. In fact, they often are unaware of the negative impact they are having. So, I’m really passionate about making people aware of how they are impacting other people. It fits in great with our work at Simply Great Lives because once people are aware of the impact they are having, they can work on having a deliberate and focused positive impact.
I find that I have a lot more energy and excitement. I have a lot more initiative. And I’m much more willing to do things that are challenging and require me to learn and stretch and grow. For example, creating the Life’s Impact Assessment, doing public speaking and learning to have more directed and challenging conversations with people have really required me to grow as a person.
But, wow, I’m fired up about this stuff! I love that I’m making people more aware of how they are impacting other people. I’m just really passionate about that. And helping them to make their impact a more positive one is really gratifying. My hope for you is that you will make the effort to find, maybe even unbury, what you are really passionate about. I’d love to see you on fire for making your unique difference in the world. Trust me, doing just something good that helps people, compared to using your passion in that work is like night and day. You deserve to enjoy that passion and excitement and other people will benefit that much more because you are in touch with and working in your passion.
