Sometimes it’s difficult to discover our calling. We look at our current life and we can’t fathom it being any different than it is. So, we look around. We try a few purpose statements on, but nothing seems to fit.
Won’t Let Go
One way to discover our calling is to look for a theme or an idea that just won’t go away. We head in a certain direction in life, but we keep getting pulled back towards this other theme.
Maybe a certain desire or idea just keeps popping up. This could be our calling, and once it gets a hold of us, our calling doesn’t let go.
This is what happened to me. This theme of telling every one to live their calling wouldn’t let go of me. We live in this world that tells us our uniqueness doesn’t matter. People tell us to just get a job so we can pay the bills. At work we are treated as interchangeable with anyone else. The world tells us to just make it through the week so we can live on the weekend.
Because of my heart attack experience, this way of living makes absolutely no sense to me anymore. And this message to tell people to live differently kept coming up again and again. It just wouldn’t let go of me.
Friends
Instead, maybe our friends keep telling us the same thing about their experience of us. They say we’re a good listener, a good speaker, a good writer, a good teacher, or maybe a good painter.
This also has happened to me. I shared with a friend my concept of what makes up a calling and how we should seek that for our life. This friend, said, “Wow! That’s a great way of explaining that. You know I wouldn’t even think of this. I can’t explain things like you just did.”
Pay attention to these things. Often times it’s not so much that we find our calling, but rather our calling finds us. Often our calling just won’t let go of us. And our response should be to just surrender to it.
