Making Your Workday Fly By

5:00 workday fly byOne of my favorite radio stations–KLOVE–claims that it makes your workday fly by. It got me thinking. How many people are stoked to have their workday fly by? Do most people want their workday to hurry up so they can get on to doing something else they’d rather be doing?

You see, I can’t relate to wanting my workday to fly by. In fact, I’m bummed if it seems my workday flew by. It’s not that I love every single task that I do in our business. But if my day flew by, for me that means there’s a lot of important things that I wanted to get done, but didn’t.

I’m just really satisfied and pretty pumped when I get off a group or individual coaching call. It’s exciting to enroll people into one of our events because I know it can change their lives. We are tired after a live event, but we’re happy. We love this work.

Compare my workday I just described to someone who doesn’t really care about their job. The day would drag on as they do tasks they don’t like or don’t value. If they’re not appreciated by their employer, it’s even worse. In that kind of scenario, it’s easy to see why someone would want to make their work day fly by. But life’s too short to spen 40+ hours a week doing something that drains you. We love to encourage people to find what they are passionate about and use their strengths and that passion to make a meaningful difference in the lives of other people. It’s great when someone can get paid for doing that.

We do recognize, though, that for some people, their calling may not bring in the income they need. Some people may need to work outside of their calling because, in that sense, their job supports their calling to be of service elsewhere.

If you have a job you really hate, that job  comes at a very high price. A dreaded job will be a substantial drain on your ability to make a positive difference in the lives of other people.

So, you could choose to get a new job that you like better. Another option would be to stay in the same job and see if you can make it more to your liking. We’ve learned that when people utilize their strengths in a job, their job satisfaction goes up substantially. Click here to take Gallup’s Clifton StrengthsFinder inventory to find out what your strengths are. Then you and your boss can get creative in finding new ways to use your strengths in your existing job.

Why not have a job where you can use your strengths and get pumped instead of being drained? If you’re finding that you want your workday to fly by, maybe it’s time to make some changes.
