When Life Happens

reading brailleSometimes we have our plans all set and we’re ready to go, then life happens. it’s impossible to avoid. We might as well plan on having it happen at some point when we are working on our calling.

It requires some flexibility. I know about it from my own experience.

I have non-age-related macular degeneration. Basically, I’m losing my central vision. That’s where we get detailed visual information for doing things like reading.

I’ve lost some of that central vision a little here and a little there over the years. Earlier this year, I lost a little chunk that made it impossible to read the text on my smart phone. It was obvious that I was going to have to learn to do things differently.

I’m finally taking a class to learn how to use Braille. I’ve tried to teach myself in the past, but I was lacking somewhat in motivation. Now that I really need to use it, I’m feeling pretty motivated. And I’m appreciating the help because, I tell you, it’s not easy. Those bumps are really small!

I can get a lot of the information I need, like notes and books, via audio. So, you may be wondering why I’d need to learn Braille. I’ve found that there are some situations where getting information by audio is either not appropriate, like when I’m in a meeting, or not feasible, like when I’m in a loud place.

It’s been a long time since I could read something gracefully. Reading things like notes while I’m giving a presentation or teaching a class has been, well, pretty awkward. I’m looking forward to being able to gracefully glide my finger over some Braille to refresh my memory on the next point I want to share. Being able to use Braille is an important part of being able to carry out my calling.

There’s a lesson I learned from my experience that I want to pass on to you. Sometimes you may be wanting to hurry up and get your calling’s significant work going. Then life happens and you need to change your plans. That’s okay. When that happens, we just take care of the things we need to take care of and then we get going again.
