Let’s Pretend

If You Always Do...Let’s pretend there was an edict to make 2015 exactly the same as 2014. And the edict would also make the next ten years exactly the same. You’ll keep the same job at the same pay. You’ll live in the same house in the same neighborhood. You’ll have to buy the same things you bought before, eat the same foods, and participate in the same activities.

This sounds oppressive doesn’t it? That’s because it is. We thrive on change – on making improvements. We want to improve our situation and ourself. We want to make things better.

The fear part of us, however, works against this. The fear part of us wants things to stay the same because if things change, it might get worse. We have fears of looking foolish, of being ridiculed, of failing, and of being rejected and criticized.

So often we make the next year look just like the last one, even though we’d rather them be different. We’d like to get healthier, wealthier, and have better, loving relationships, among others. But often we find ourselves stuck in the same old patterns.

Now that I’ve highlighted this battle – the need for change vs our fears of change, you get to make a choice. Which is worse, living a monotonous life that’s always the same with small victories and little adventure, or facing our fears of change? You get to decide.

If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always gotten. For me, I decided that keeping things the same is like dying on the inside a little at a time, and it is far worse than facing my fears. What do you want for your life?
