We keep talking about the things you need to do to find your calling. But you may ask, “How can I know when I’ve found my calling and stop looking?” Well, I’m glad you asked.
Indicators
You can know you’ve found your calling when you think or say the following:
- I am really good at it and I have fun living my calling
- I really care about it
- The world is a much better place because of it
These are the 3 main ingredients. But in addition to these 3 things, when you’ve found your calling, you will feel like a lot of your life is in alignment. A key part of your life story will support your calling. Other small events in your past, though seemingly random, will be experiences that help you in your calling. It will use your unique way of looking at the world. And finally, God will appear to be in on it too.
Anti-Indicators
On the flip side, here are some things that are *not* indicators that you’ve found your calling:
- I feels comfortable doing it
- It’s easy for me
- It’s what I’ve always been doing
- I already know everything I need to know to live it
When we find our calling, it will be an adventure. Just like in any adventure, there are some challenges to overcome. It won’t be comfortable, and it most certainly won’t be easy.
Often, when we are told to do or be something different, we have a gap. There’s the gap between where we are today and where we want to be. This gap is uncomfortable. Often we close the gap by cheating. We just say, “Oh, I’m already at my goal,” either by lowering the goal, or by blindly overstating our current status. Sometimes we even do this subconsciously. But this isn’t the truth. If you think you’ve always been living your calling, it might be a good idea to check to see if you’ve cheated to avoid discomfort.
Living to our full potential requires personal growth. It requires that we do things we’ve never done before, and it requires we grow into personal qualities we’ve not had before. We won’t know everything we need to know when we start out, nor for much of the journey.
