When a boat is adrift, it means that the anchor is up, and no one manning the rudder. The boat is tossed any which way by the wind, the waves, and the currents. Such a boat is not on course to a destination. And it may very well dash upon some rocks, or run aground on a sand bar. Who knows where it will end up?
Is this an analogy to your life? Like that boat, is your life adrift? Do your circumstances control your life? Does your boss, your spouse, a friend, your parents, the economy, or the product in front of you have absolute sway over the way your life goes? Are a lot of your behaviors driven by what other people might think of you? If so, then your life might be adrift like that boat.
Who knows where you will end up? You’re tossed any which way by the apparent crisis of the day, the random opportunities that are presented, and by a need for love and acceptance. Some folks will say all these things are God’s direction, but what if they’re not? What if God is waiting and watching to see what you will choose to do with your life? You are given your talents. What will you do with them?
It’s time to stop drifting and start living
The primary difference between drifting and living is in the location of the control of your life. When everything and everyone out there has control over your life, you are drifting. When you take control of your life, you start living. This doesn’t mean you won’t take input from outside sources. It just means that you take hold of the compass of your life, and you always move toward your true north.
If you look back over the last several big decisions in your life, were they made because of external circumstances, or where they planned ahead of time? If most of the decisions you have made are because someone or something happened out there, your life might be adrift.
When you are in control of your life, you know where you’re going – you know your destination. Sure things might come up that veer you in different direction, but then you grab the wheel, turn the rudder, and turn back to your true north. You know what to say, “yes” to – those things that move you north. You also know what things to say, “no” to – those things that detract and distract. And rather than waiting for opportunities to present themselves, you initiate in your life.
What is it costing you to keep drifting? Can you stand going one more day being tossed around by everything out there? Are you ready to stop drifting and take control over your life?
