Increasing Mental Capacity

thinkerThese days I don’t remember as much as I used to. It’s a bit unsettling. For example, in my younger years, I would park in long term parking at the airport, and I’d remember my parking area when I got back. Today I think I’ll remember, but I’ll write it down just in case, and upon returning, I’ll discover that I can’t remember. My mental capacity appears to have decreased. But has it really?

These days, I have a lot more going on in my life. As a business owner, there are a lot more things to keep track of. I manage our website, coach clients, build workshops, design business cards, prepare speeches, write blogs, teach classes, book travel, sell our services, manage our finances, and keep all our technology working. This doesn’t count the things I need to do and remember for our family.

I find that a lot of you have similar, crazy schedules, and I believe that like it is for me, it’s affecting your apparent mental capacity. In reality our mental capacity hasn’t decreased. We are just maxed out. Our mental capacity is at its limits.

So how do we engage in highly creative activities when we are mentally maxed out?

Perhaps you don’t think your creativity is affected. In my experience, it is affected greatly. I’ve had an experience that perhaps you can relate to. The perfect vacation for me is to do very little for 10 days. Around day 5 something shifts in me. I stop thinking about work and my regular day. And I notice that my creative capacity goes way up. My ability to think outside the box increases, and I can see and understand things much more clearly. Have you experienced something like this? This shows to me that my creativity is affected by all the little things I’m trying to remember and keep track of.

What could happen in our life if we were able to continually operate at or near our peek creative capacity? I think a lot of our life would flow. Problems would get handled quickly and smoothly. We would have more peace, and we’d have more of what we want in our life.

Here are just a few ways to have more mental capacity and be more creative.

  1. Write down more
Don’t keep your too list in your head. It wastes mental energy.
  2. Simplify your life
Reducing the number of things you’re involved in, reduces the number of things you think about.
  3. Have time to do nothing
With our electronics, we tend to fill all our available time. Create slots of time to meditate or just do nothing. This will free up your mind to be more creative.

What are the ways you use to help expand your mental capacity?
