Last week on The Impact Hour we explored why it’s so important to fix the real problem rather than to fix symptoms of the problem. It’s become apparent that in our country we have a serious problem that needs to be fixed. It’s the problem of racism.
The civil rights movement of the 1960s moved our society light-years from where it was. It made it illegal to discriminate in specific ways based on race. It opened up a lot of opportunities. It was a tremendous improvement over the horrors of lynchings and legalized discrimination in Jim Crow laws.
Unfortunately, making discrimination illegal was a symptomatic solution. It did not fix the root problem. It left untouched the underlying cause of the discrimination. Until the underlying cause of racism is sufficiently addressed, racism will continue.
I believe that now is the perfect time to fix the root problems of racism. Now that it is terribly apparent that there is indeed a real problem, it’s time to find the underlying cause. It’s time for healing.
It’s been painful to see all the turmoil in our country: the killings, the retribution, the outrage, the threats, and the inflammatory comments. And I see a lot of fear in a lot of different kinds of people. We have a great need for healing right now.
Now is the time for people to stand up and get to the root of this problem. It’s time for average, every day people to become experts on the cause of racism in our country. Let’s find the root problem and fix it.
Isn’t it obvious there is no difference in humans because of their color? Isn’t it obvious that there are other causes for the differences we observe in our country?
What is the real cause of these differences? If it’s poverty, what are the causes of poverty? We must go deeper to understand what’s really going on. We must go deeper to find and fix the real problem.
I believe the root cause lies somewhere among mindsets and beliefs and emotions. No piece of legislation can fix those things. It will take a different kind of movement.
If this is your passion, this is your call to step up, find the root causes of racism and to start working to fix them.
Even if this is not your passion, you can help. You can change the conversation around you. Stop complaining and start asking questions. Where do these problems really come from and what can we do to create some real change? Stop indulging in fear and start building a positive expectation of change. We all need to stop being part of the problem and become part of the solution.
Now is the time for healing and mto eliminate racism in our society.
