Got Time?

timeTime is an essential component in living our calling. In fact, we made it the first of our seven steps to discover your purpose and live your calling. We encourage people to devote 10 hours each week to this journey.

Many people are incredulous about being able to free up that much time. After all, we all are super busy. However, I recently had an experience that made it obvious how much our schedule is determined by our choices.

On Tuesday, July 15 at 9 AM, I walked into the emergency room with John because he was experiencing heart attack-like symptoms. At that moment, I had a lot of things on my schedule:

  • a phone call with my prayer partner
  • a class at church
  • braille class
  • a conference call with my mastermind group
  • a get-together with a cousin I hadn’t seen since I was a kid
  • a business networking meeting
  • a bunch of follow-up calls to make to people who came to our book release party

As it became clear that John was indeed having a heart attack, I started dropping commitments left and right. I canceled stuff by phone and by text message. Next thing I knew, my previously full schedule was suddenly open. No joke, wide open. I was really struck by the contrast. So many things that I Thought I “had” to do were actually choices.

There are very few things in life where we don’t have a choice. How we choose to spend our time is up to us. So, I encourage you to take a look at your schedule to see if you are spending your time the way you want to. Are you making time for what’s important, like making a difference in the lives of other people?
