Are you fighting for the right stuff in your life? Because of my blindness, I have had to learn to discern what’s important and what’s not. I have to regularly choose what’s the right stuff to put my time and effort into. It really does take effort to choose the right stuff because a lot of times it’s easier to choose the stuff that’s not really important in the big scheme of things.
For example, I recently enrolled in a class. So I go to listen to the first training module online. I tried to take the easy route and listen on my iPhone. The browser crashed a couple times and each time I would lose my place in the audio recording. So I started listening to it on my computer’s browser and the same thing happened. So I finally downloaded the file . A PDF I was supposed to read presented more challenges. It took some real persistence to be able to read it with my screen reader. It was tempting to play Dice World on my phone instead–at least that’s accessible without my eyes.
The challenges I’m dealing with here are specific to my blindness and accessibility issues. But the idea applies, I think, to you, too. We all need to choose what’s worth fighting for. Sometimes the really important stuff just doesn’t come easily:
- a relationship to mend
- a skill to learn
- a challenge to take
- a program to pay for
- an application to fill out and submit
- a class to take or even a degree to earn
- a test to pass
- discomfort to endure
The right stuff, the stuff in life that will have a positive and enduring impact, seldom comes easily. Being uncomfortable is just a part of the territory in doing things that matter. Those things take extra effort.
It is really hard to discern what’s the right stuff that’s worth doing when we are at all unclear on what we want to achieve with our lives. Without that clarity–that knowing THIS is the impact I want to have with my life–the natural default is to do what comes easy and requires no risk.
Unfortunately, If we don’t get clear on what’s the right stuff to pour our lives into, we will reach the end of our lives, turn around and realize that we poured ourselves into the wrong stuff. That’s a world of hurt and regret that’s worth avoiding. Instead, we can enjoy a life of purpose, meaning and significance. We can enjoy that satisfaction for the rest of our years here.
