Do you have a dream you’ve been putting off? Maybe you’ve had a dream in your heart to make a big difference in people’s lives, but you see it coming way off in the future. How cool would it be if you could realize that dream now instead of years from now?
I’ve seen people have the most delightful plans of making an awesome difference, but their plans seem Unachievable in the near term. In fact, I know someone who seriously told me it was going to take 40 years before his dream would be a reality. He’s as old as me, so that’s running the risk of not living long enough to fulfill that dream. That example may be a little extreme. Other people we’ve worked with planned on getting cracking on their dream in five years. But we got them going on it right away.
My concern is that the people who need our help need it now. There are so many people who’s lives won’t have that positive impact if we don’t get started sooner.
The problem is that we tend to get really specific about how our dream to make a difference has to look. It’s kind of like planning a party and deciding that the napkins HAVE to be pink. Then we say, “Nope, I can’t do it. The store only has white or blue napkins and they have to be pink. I can’t have the party.”
If only it were that simple, a solution might be more obvious. Instead, people put their dream on hold, telling themselves things like
- “I have to retire first.”
- “I have to move to another state.”
- “I need to pay off all my debt first.”
- “I have to wait until this issue in my marriage is resolved.”
- “I need an advanced college degree.”
