It’s easy to think like a victim during the holiday season. Everyone is talking about all the events to attend, cards to make out and mail, the shopping, food, and general sense of overall craziness. At Simply Great Lives, we want to remind you that you are in control of your life, even in December. So don’t go victim to the holidays.
Everything is a choice. We may simply be faced with more choices to make this time of year. Still, we have the power to choose how we use our time, energy and money.
Time
There may very well be too much to do and not enough time to do it all. We’ll need to get picky about how we use our time. It’s OK to say “no” to extra time-taker-uppers. Not attending every holiday activity, event or party doesn’t make someone a bad person; it makes them a focused person.
Energy
Energy-sucker-uppers are worth avoiding. That could include not doing things you find draining or not spending time with people who suck you dry. Just as important, be sure to continue the things that give you energy. Now isn’t the time to stop exercising, meditating or taking time for your normal spiritual disciplines.
Money
Christmas is not a synonym for overspending. It’s, in fact, the perfect opportunity to make a plan for how you want to spend your money. Making a plan for how much money to spend on the holidays makes individual buying decisions easier. You don’t have to break the bank to let people know you care. The main idea is this: we should always let our values determine how we use our time, energy and money. Claiming this power makes it possible to continue moving toward the goals that are important to us.
Most people lose their momentum this time of year and start the new year worse off than they were at the beginning of November. But you don’t have to go victim to the holidays. Instead, you can start your new year even closer to achieving your life’s goals.
