I just heard someone tell people in a speaker training that if your not passionate about your topic, fake it. He even suggested taking an acting class if you need to in order to give the impression that you’re passionate about what you’re talking about. I couldn’t disagree more. Please, don’t fake it!
For one thing, if you’re not really passionate about what you’re doing,–whether it’s selling a product or service or giving a talk about something or almost anything else–people will sense you don’t really care about it. The only person you’d be fooling is yourself if you’re faking it.
People long to really connect with a real person. Putting up a front of any kind is a great way to kill a real connection. Being authentic and vulnerable are much more valued these days than putting on airs and pretending to be something we’re not.
Even more important, if you’re not doing something about what you’re really passionate about, it’s time to start doing something new. It breaks my heart to see people justify what they are already doing. “I’m making a difference selling these widgets.” It’s easier to keep doing the familiar than to venture out and try something new. What most people don’t know is that it’s absolutely thrilling to get in touch with a passion and to act on it.
So, my advice is to do something you are really passionate about rather than pretending you’re passionate about what you’re already doing. Don’t fake it. You’re only ripping off yourself and other people if you are faking it. There is a much better alternative waiting for you.
