Do Your Roots Run Deep?

trees with rootsWalking along the street in Redondo Beach, I came across some trees with lots of their roots bunched up on the ground. I’ve never seen so many exposed roots before. Certainly they must go below ground, too. I wondered how deep they went. It got me thinking of the importance of being deeply rooted to our deepest values, connecting to our “why” that will keep us motivated in making our positive impact.

Shallow Roots

Maybe we haven’t yet identified what we are really passionate about. Or maybe we know our passion but are not yet honoring it by taking action on it. So we may be doing some good stuff that’s benefiting some people. But it lacks the fuel that comes with a powerful “why.” When the storms of life come, our roots may not run deep enough to hold and we let go of our commitment to make a deep and long-lasting impact in the lives of other people.

Deep Roots

Having a deep connection to a passion that inspires us to want to make a difference is amazing. Often our passion is rooted in a powerful experience that shaped us. Other times it’s something else that weighs heavy on our heart. There’s a lot of emotion and it’s something that’s very important to us. Roots that tap into this kind of passion keep us motivated despite trials and struggles that come along.

What’s Your Passion?

Here are some questions to get you thinking about a deep passion you can tap into:

  • What breaks your heart?
  • What would make your heart sing?
  • If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and why?
  • What’s a powerfully difficult experience you had and how can you use it to bless others?
  • What’s a powerfully positive experience you had that you could use to benefit others?

If an answer doesn’t come right away, don’t give up. Do some journaling and keep coming back to it. Sinking your roots into a deep passion to make an impact in the world can move mountains.
