Imagine you are on this side of a great chasm. I am with you. I take you by the hand and lead you through the trees. We approach the large chasm. It is wide and it’s not possible to see the other side. It is obscured by fog and darkness.
There is a bridge. It looks scary because it’s just a small footbridge. You strain to see the other side where the bridge must eventually end, but you can’t see it.
I encourage you. “It’s OK, you can make it. I’ve traveled the bridge before and I can show you the way.”
We’ve already talked about how awesome it is on the other side. That’s where meaning and significance live. There is joy and satisfaction. It’s what you want. But it looks so scary.
You are faced with a choice. You can stay on this side and continue to live in the land of the familiar. It’s not exactly what you want, but at least it’s reasonably comfortable. Or you can hold my hand and venture out into the unfamiliar. You may only be able to discern the next step or two, because on this journey, there’s no way to see the whole path from the beginning. Just one step at a time. But the payoff is amazing–that uniquely-you positive impact you’ve been dreaming of.
I’ve taken many people to the edge. Some have said, “yes.” I had a man who told me, “This is my only priority. It is a matter of life or death.”
Other people approached the edge and got scared. They convinced themselves that this side wasn’t so bad after all. Obscurity and an unclear impact was acceptable. Sometimes they mutter something like, “I’ll just see if I can volunteer at my church.” I’ve heard it so many times. Taking risk and stepping out into the unknown was just too much, too overwhelming. So they chose to stay behind.
“I’ve got you,” I told them. “You can do this and I’ll be right there with you.”
“No, thank you,” they replied. “I’ll be OK right here.”
I feel sad any time I can show people the amazing possibilities and then they choose to stay where they’re at. I never really give up on them, though. I remember our conversations and I hold the possibility that some day they will choose greatness for themselves in order to be of maximum benefit to other people.
