Our Calling Flows from Our Strengths

musclesLast time I explained that our calling is unique to use, and it flows from who we are. Today I am going explore this a little more. Our calling flows from our strengths.

God doesn’t gives natural talents and abilities and then expect us to not use them. Instead, God has wired us up a certain way, and our calling should naturally flow from how we are wired up.

What are Strengths?

Our natural talents and strengths, though, might not be what you think. We normally think of strengths like teaching, leading, doing math, etc. But these are just skills. We are good at these types of skills because we are able to draw on our strengths when doing them. Our natural talents and strengths are underneath these skills.

Often various people will draw on different talents for the same skill. This is why you can have so many different styles of teaching, for example. Each teacher is good, but they use different strengths, and the way they teach is different.

If you’d like to learn more about these underlying talents, check out https://www.gallupstrengthscenter.com, or the book “Strengths Finder 2.0” by Tom Rath.

This also means that whatever strengths you think you have, teaching, management, writing, etc, you aren’t locked into this. The underlying talents you use to be a good manager, for example, can also be used for other skills.

This opens up possibility. Your current job or career isn’t necessarily your calling. This is good news especially if you’re not enthralled with your job.

Our calling will flow from who we are. This means that we will be drawing on our natural talents and strengths, and we will be pretty darn good at it.

What about you? What are you really good at?
