But I Have A Good Excuse

checked boxI have a good excuse for not doing anything special in life. At least people tell me it’s a good excuse. I’m legally blind. All the time people tell me I could just call it quits and stay at home and do nothing. Maybe they tell me that because for them it would be a valid excuse for doing nothing significant.

I realize that blindness is especially scary for sighted folks. There are a lot of things we need to learn to do differently when we don’t see or don’t see well. I think, though, that people are often looking for an excuse to skip doing work that stretches them. It’s more comfortable to take the easy way out than to embrace risk and endure discomfort.

Here are some common excuses people make for not making a real difference in the world:

  • “I was abused as a child.”
  • “I don’t have a college education.”
  • “I grew up poor.”
  • “I got divorced.”
  • “I’m not very good at reading.”
  • “I don’t make much money.”
  • “I’m awkward socially.”
  • “I have diabetes.”
  • “I’m too busy with work.”
  • “I spend all my time being a mom.”

In reality, there may be issues and circumstances that slow us down. Occasionally, something may even happen that would stop us from making a big impact. For example, being a caregiver to a terminally ill family member could reasonably use up a person’s energy so they have little if any left to give elsewhere. This situation really is an exception. It is also temporary. Most people could make a significant difference.

I believe the biggest reason people don’t step out and make a real difference is that they don’t believe they can do it. If you are struggling to believe you can be the person who makes a real difference in someone’s life, I want you to know that you have what it takes. The biggest obstacle you will ever encounter in seeking to live a life of significance is your own limiting beliefs.

So, first beware of making an excuse for yourself. Next, surround yourself with positive people who see your true potential and will encourage you to learn and stretch and grow. Get focused and choose a positive impact you want to have that combines your passions and strengths and makes a meaningful difference. If you want support, don’t hesitate to reach out to me and John because we’d love to come along side you on your journey. Finally, keep working at it and don’t give up. There are people out there who are praying for the help you can bring into their lives!
