A Defining Moment

heart-rateSometimes we experience a defining moment in our life. Because of this one moment, our whole life changes. I had a defining moment like this.

As many of you have read in our book and in this blog, in 2005 I had a heart attack. I was very young for a heart attack at the age of 38.

On the night of the heart attack, I felt instantly sick to my stomach. I remember being curled up on the bathroom floor knowing something was really wrong, and I was so scared.

I had the thought that maybe I wouldn’t be around anymore to go to work on Monday. A following thought was, “Holy crap! This could be the end of my life and I had spent so much of it on things that really don’t matter.”

I asked myself, “Do I love people well?”, and “Does my life matter?” And I didn’t like my answers.

Today, as I interact with people out in the world, I see a lot of casual attitudes around the idea of living with significance. And I want to yell, “Wake up!”

What I wish is for you to have your “holy crap!” moment right now, so that you don’t need to have a heart attack or some other horrific event to realize how important this is. You certainly don’t want to be having your “holy crap!” moment at a time when it’s already too late to make a change.

I want to end by challenging you with a few questions:

  • To how many people is your life significant?
  • Do you know what impact your life is currently having?
  • Do you know how you want to meaningfully benefit other people?
  • Are you creating all the results from your life that you want to create?
  • My life is driven by my two questions, “Do I love people well?”, and “Does my life matter?” What questions are driving your life?

If you’re not completely satisfied that you are fully living your legacy, don’t live another day traveling down this current path. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Make a choice to live your calling, and let us know how we can support you.
