When it comes to living one’s calling, many people talk about starting a non-profit organization. Maybe it’s a foundation or an agency. It’s usually some kind of charity created to accomplish good for people. Seldom do I hear people talk about starting a for-profit business as a part of living their calling. But a for-profit business may be a good option. Non-profits are not the only way to significantly impact people’s lives, though. All businesses provide something of value. That’s why they get paid. Many for-profit companies significantly impact people’s lives.
The Value of a For-Profit Business
Consider Dave Ramsey and his business. Thousands of people have taken control of their money and built up wealth (with which they can be generous) because of his radio show and Financial Peace University classes. He’s not running a non-profit. He’s making good money and he deserves it. He’s also very generous. Many people benefit from his generosity.
There are many ways to significantly impact people’s lives as a for-profit business. Here’s just a small list to get you thinking:
- medical doctor, chiropractor or physical therapist
- Counselor, therapist or life coach
- Manufacturers of prosthetic devices, hearing aids and eyeglasses
- Researchers for a cure for cancer
Personally, I’ve paid for a boatload of professionals that have helped me: psychologists, psychiatrists, a life coach, business coach and health coach. I’m super-grateful to the folks at Apple who made my smart phone accessible with low or no vision. What’s made a big, positive difference in your life Use those examples to expand your thinking about how people can live their calling.
When Should It Be a Non-Profit?
Sometimes a non-profit agency is the right choice. When the recipient of the product or service is either unable or unwilling to pay for it, a non-profit allows them to get that product or service anyway. A third party pays for it. That’s why a non-profit needs to get funding from other sources. But if the person getting that beneficial product or service is willing and able to pay for it, there’s no need to get outside funding. A for-profit business can be self-supporting and a benefit to people at the same time.
But, Isn’t It Bad to Want to Make a Profit?
Many people are uncomfortable making money by making a difference. Our society gives the message that businesses are evil and people who have money are greedy. There are some business owners that seek to take advantage of people by not providing the full value of what they’re getting paid for. However, they are the exception, not the norm.
Non-profits are not the only way to bless people. For-profit businesses can provide a ton of value to society. The people that trade something of value and trade it for money and the profit they make are the ones that provide the funding for non-profits Someone needs to pay. We want people to have a solid understanding of the value of business. That way they can make the best choice between starting a non-profit or a for-profit business.
