A Little Guidance

brothers walkingI watched a little boy get some guidance the other day and it was beautiful. I was standing in line at Panera when two little boys passed me on the left. One boy was maybe for or five years old and the other boy was just two or three.

If I hadn’t seen them, I would have heard them. The older boy was saying, “Come on, come on. This way. Come on, come on, come on. And the littler boy’s sandals rapidly hit the tile floor: clip clop, clip clop, clip clop.

Seeing such a little boy provide guidance was adorable. I was really struck, though, by his guiding hand on the littler boy’s back. It was especially helpful as they rounded the corner and headed down the hall. The little boy wasn’t allowed to veer off to the right, he got the  guidance he needed to get where he needed to go.

I loved the living metaphor. How much in life would we benefit from getting some guidance. I think of our coaches who guide me and John. We’ve told them where we want to go and they know how to get there because they’ve traveled the path themselves. So they guide us and encourage us. “Come on, come on, this way. You’ve got it, keep going.”

Are you wanting to get somewhere in life where you haven’t gone before? Find a mentor or coach or group or teacher who can give you guidance and support. They’ve been there before, so they can help you avoid the pitfalls and circumvent obstacles. They can help you keep going when the going gets tough. They can remind you why the journey and the work is worthwhile when you otherwise may be inclined to give up.

In my experience, traveling the path to meaning and significance takes a whole lot longer and provides more limited results when we try to do it on our own. It’s a tough road to travel alone, so why not get some support?
